Shankar Mahadevan is a highly acclaimed Indian singer and composer who is a key member of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy musical trio. He was born in Mumbai and received formal training in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music from a young age. Before entering the film industry, he worked as a software engineer for Oracle Corporation. He gained widespread fame with his 1998 debut album Breathless, which showcased his ability to sing long passages without pausing for breath. His career in Bollywood took off as a playback singer, earning him multiple National Film Awards for his vocal performances. As part of the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, he has composed music for numerous blockbuster films including Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Rock On!!. He is widely regarded as one of the most versatile vocalists in the Indian music industry, capable of transitioning between classical, pop, and jazz styles. Mahadevan is also a recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors. He founded the Shankar Mahadevan Academy to provide online music education to students worldwide.
