Amanda Gorman is an American poet and activist known for her powerful spoken-word performances. She gained international recognition after reciting her poem The Hill We Climb at the 2021 inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she was diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder as a child. She began writing poetry at a young age as a way to overcome a speech impediment. In 2017, she became the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. She graduated from Harvard University with a degree in sociology in 2020. Her work often focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization. Following her inauguration performance, she became the first poet to perform at a Super Bowl.
