Mia Hamm is a retired American professional soccer player who played as a forward for the United States women's national soccer team. She was a founding member of the Washington Freedom and played for the team from 2001 to 2003. Hamm held the record for most international goals scored by any player, male or female, in soccer history for over a decade. She won two Olympic gold medals and two FIFA Women's World Cup titles during her illustrious career. Hamm was named the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002, becoming the first woman to win the award twice. She played college soccer for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, where she helped the team win four consecutive NCAA championships. In 2004, she was named one of the 125 greatest living Brazilian footballers and other international players by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list.
