Robert Shaye is an American film producer, director, and actor best known for founding the independent film studio New Line Cinema. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan before earning a law degree from Columbia University. In 1967, he established New Line Cinema, which initially focused on distributing foreign and art-house films. The company gained significant commercial success in the 1980s with the release of the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise. Shaye served as the CEO of New Line Cinema for over four decades, overseeing its growth into a major Hollywood studio. He is widely recognized for his bold decision to produce Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings' film trilogy. Under his leadership, the studio became a powerhouse in the horror and fantasy genres. Shaye has also directed several films, including 'Book of Numbers' and 'The Last Mimzy'. He remained with New Line Cinema until it was fully integrated into Warner Bros. in 2008.
