John Benson Sebastian is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as a founder of the band The Lovin' Spoonful. He was born in Greenwich Village, New York City, into a musical family. His father was a classical harmonica player and his mother was a radio scriptwriter. Sebastian became a key figure in the Greenwich Village folk music scene during the early 1960s. He formed The Lovin' Spoonful in 1965, which achieved massive success with hits like 'Do You Believe in Magic' and 'Daydream'. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. After leaving the group in 1968, he pursued a successful solo career. He famously performed an impromptu set at the Woodstock festival in 1969. In 1976, he reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with his song 'Welcome Back', the theme for the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists such as The Doors, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Fred Neil. He is also an accomplished player of the autoharp and harmonica. Sebastian continues to perform and remains a respected figure in American folk and rock music history.
